We went to renew Johanna's drivers licence today...no can do. We can't prove we were ever married, mariage Certificates issued by the church are not an acceptable form of proof to the US or state government. So we have to get a certified copy from NYC which can fortunately can be done by mail. So they say let's see what they want for proof "of who you are".

Next year everyone in the state of Texas must get a new driver license, because of so many people have been caught with difference (fake) made in Mexico. I bet they will want a marriage certificate issued by the state.

Weren't you given a marriage certificate when you went for your blood test before you got married? I remember me and Mickey went to the courthouse on the Grand Concourse by the stadium to get our marriage certificate and we had to have that to show the church before they could marry us.
Anyway, I am sure it's a simple thing to get a copy of your marriage certificate from N.Y.C.

If I'm not mistaken we had to hand that certificate over to the church who issued us a marriage certificate and turned that city certificate into the city when they reported that the marriage ceremony was complete.

I just asked Mickey and she said after we handed our marriage license to the priest, the church then mails it back to the city verifying that the ceremony took place. Then the city mailed us a copy of that certificate. Mickey had to have that to take her cruise this summer.
So my question is......didn't the city mail you a copy of your marriage license or certificate after the church verified that the ceremony took place?

Lenny, just curious, why did Mickey need her marriage cert to take the cruise. The new laws were that passports were necessary...even that is on hold now since too many people are requesting passports. Boys just had their's renewed for our upcoming cruise....now you just need to show that your applied.

My wife had trouble getting a passport because she does not drive and never had a licence. She had many other things to identify her but no drivers licence. This was before 911.

Married in Hawaii. Never received any marriage cetificate. Wrote to the church we were married in and they said they don't issue certificates; had our marriage blessed in the Catholic Church 13 years after we were married; wrote to that church and they could only give us a certificate from the blessing date. I was only preparing for social security benefits at th time. I have yet to be asked for a copy of a marriage certificate for anything. I am guessing that when Joe applies for social security since he is younger than I, he will have to produce this to prove we are married even though he will be collecting on his own account. The world is turned upside down! What does it matter if you are married just to get a driver's license?  Marital status has nothing to do with a license to drive. Yup, the world is upside down!! Be sure she wears her Burka and covers her face for her photo!!! Good grief, the world is upside down!!! |

Since they delayed the necessity of a passport, they asked for a marriage certificate.
When I applied for social security two month's ago, I was asked for my marriage certificate.
I am not sure why?
If Mexicans become eligible for social security, will they be asked for a marriage certificate? If so, where will they get it from? For goodness sake, they don't even need a social security number!

It makes no sense to me that you need a marriage certificate to apply for a driver's license. As far as a drivers license to prove anything, my Mom got a non-drivers license complete with picture. Barry's wife should look into that.
While we are correct on blaming terrorism, identity theft has a part in what documents we need to prove we are who we are.

My wife did get a non drivers licence with picture so she could get her passport. The licence has since expired.

The marriage certificate shows the continuity from the maiden name to the marriage name. I asked the clerk what happens if we don't receive it by month end, she said a copy of the application for a certified certificate of marriage will do? Is this insane or what?
