Employees of the government who are called up have the same benefits and I believe the two years is part of legislation passed many years ago regarding holding positions for people who are called into the military. When I was the benefit administrator for NAF employees of the Marine Corps we gave pension credit for the years a person served in the military if that service came after their employment. If they had service before we hired them, they could purchase that time in our pension plan as though they had worked for us while in service.
It is good to hear what Sears is doing and many large companies are doing this as well. During Desert Shield and Storm many families at home were left destitute because of loss of earnings and benefits. I believe the legislation was passed under Papa Bush that I am talking about. Of course, it only pertained to large businesses.
COBRA is a nice benefit but is so costly that the average person/family cannot afford it. The only families I have known to take COBRA are those wit an uninsurable family member.
