Thanks Lou. Amazing numbers of pedophiles. I'll be checking this site before my next move.

Just remember there are different levels of sex offenders grouped together... There are the pedophiles who should be hunted, castrated, and killed...
But there are also the 18 (and one day) yr old boys who dated a 17 (and 364 days) yr old, and the relationship went bad and the girl wanted revenge and called the cops.. Sadly, I know of two people (kids of friends) who were threatened with that type of situation.. Both resolved themself without going to court and giving the kids records, but I'm betting lots of kids werent as lucky...
Both type are classified as "sex offenders"... And theres a world of difference between the two...

James - I agree with you 100% about the levels of sex offenders.
There aren't too many listed near my home, but there is one that is just a stone's throw away. It is pretty scary. I always make myself aware of my surroundings. I look out the window before I leave the house, and lock my car door as soon as I get in the car. When I arrive at my destination I look around before getting out of the car. I think a lot of this stems from living in the Bronx during the Son of Sam episode.

james you are so right --------------i have an involvement with the sex offender reports at pd and its obvious that some of them are young kids that have had consentual sex and a parent (usually the girls) have turned the boyfriend in to the authorities --- i feel sorry for these kids but then there are the real pervs

KIDS TODAY NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHEN THEY ARE BEING APPROACHED BY A SEX OFFENDER. WHEN I WAS 12 IN THE BRONX, I WAS IN A MOVIE THEATER WITH MY FRIEND. A MAN SAT NEXT TO ME AND STARTED TALKING TO ME. HE TOLD ME IT WAS NOT COLD ENOUGH FOR ME TO BE WEARING MY OVER SWEATER AND TOLD ME TO TAKE IT OFF. HE PUT HIS ARM AROUND MY NECK. I LOOKED AT MY FRIEND AND "LIPPED" THE WORDS "GET THE MANAGER". THE MANAGER CAME, ASKED WHAT HAPPENED..I TOLD HIM....... HE AND THE USHERS HELD THE MAN UNTIL THE POLICE CAME AND HE WAS TAKEN AWAY. I NEVER KNEW WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT. BUT, SOMETIMES THE OFFENDERS COME ON AS WELL MEANING PEOPLE, WHEN THEY ARE NOT!!! CHILDREN NEED TO BE INFORMED!!

Hey Lou, got a legal-ish question for you... if two kids are both under 17 and have consensual sex, can the boy (or girl) get arrested for sex with a minor? My wife doesnt think so, but I couldve swore I heard that they can... james you are so right --------------i have an involvement with the sex offender reports at pd and its obvious that some of them are young kids that have had consentual sex and a parent (usually the girls) have turned the boyfriend in to the authorities --- i feel sorry for these kids but then there are the real pervs

Jimmy is so right... Most predators dont say "Here kid you want candy? in a creepy voice... But they can be quite charming and break the kids defenses... Watch this video to see a security expert get past the kids defenses (with the parents permission and watchful eye) on the Today show www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17422947/Its the clip called "How would your child react to a stranger?" Very scary and informative... KIDS TODAY NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHEN THEY ARE BEING APPROACHED BY A SEX OFFENDER. WHEN I WAS 12 IN THE BRONX, I WAS IN A MOVIE THEATER WITH MY FRIEND. And theres a world of difference between the two... In general, I agree. We shouldn't be too quick to stigmatize someone. But the dozen, or so, pervs I checked the details on were typically in their 30's, 40's, and older, and were convicted of abuse of children less than 12 yrs old (or 14 yrs old, depending on state). So, unless the convictions were 20 or more yrs ago.... The site Lou posted does allow you to check their age and the crimes they were convicted of, but it doesn't always show when it occurred. Not fun reading.... I think the site is valuable, and I wouldn't be too concerned about the situation you mentioned. I suspect it is a small percentage of the cases. If the perv lived next door, I might want to find more details. But I think for most of those who live nearby, I just want to know what they look like, what they were convicted of, how many times, and where they live. I'm still amazed at the numbers of these guys out there. As an aside, CA recently passed a law prohibiting convicted pedophiles from living within 2000 ft, about 1/3 mile, of a school (I think that's the provision). It is making it hard for these guys to find a place to live. Many are just going homeless, living under bridges. or whatever. While it's a problem (for law enforcement, etc), I'm finding it difficult to sympathize with them.

I checked out the address of the sex offender today, and I was surprised to realize how close it is to one of the elementary schools. Does anyone know how far he needs to live from a school?

That's governed by state law, Wheezie. I don't think many states have such a restriction. And there are a number of organizations fighting the California laws. There seems to be a lot of hand-wringing over the plight of these pedophiles.
