Did you know that Honigs -- the little crummy store (which i loved growing up) on Webster and E 204th street was a publicly traded company??? Its ticker was HPKW... They only had the one store too.. really shocked me to find out that the Prof had shares of it back in the day...

We bought all our kids Chistmas toys at Honig's and during the year bought bikes, etc. even when I lived in NJ. I was unaware that it was a public traded company. I'd be rich today if the stock I owned in a mortgage company didn't collapse.

Honigs sounds familiar, but I don't think I ever went in there. Did either of you ever go to Cougar's Sport Shop? They were located on Webster, near Gun Hill, right under where the 3rd Ave El turned. I spent a lot of time, '61-'65ish hanging out there, when I was into scuba diving. The place was owned by two brothers, Joe and John Schuch (sp?)- great guys.

Pegleg,
I worked with a guy, John Duffy, that frequented Cougars. John was going to teach me scuba diving ... he was trained by the Navy in order to rescue pilots that went in the drink on carrier operations etc. Lo and behold I find out he was never in the service he was 4f...the next day a bunch of the guys at work who were in the Navy marched by his work station singing Anchors Aweigh. He actually had the nerve to ask me why I said anything...I said you want me to risk my life with you what else did you lie about.

James, That was "THE STORE" to buy whatever.. And we did.. My in laws loves to shop there. In fact, I still have the mirror they brought for over the dresser.
And Charlie and Pegleg, Cougers was the place my Hubby was always in with his friend Ralph. They did a lot of Bow Hunting. John and Joe knew them very well. If I remember well, they moved to another store, or they moved to Webster from another store, not sure which way it was. (Senior Moment) LOL

One of the last places in The Bronx I hung out in was the Rustic Inn on the south east corner of Webster and Gun Hill.
Also played soft ball for the Poe Cozy Nook on the Concourse across from Poe Park and Robert Hall

If I remember well, they moved to another store, or they moved to Webster from another store, not sure which way it was. (Senior Moment) LOL Cougar's specialized in archery and diving. I keep thinking there was a 3rd sport they were into, but I can't recall it (tennis, golf, ??)? Their original store was farther south on Webster. I understand they moved up to Ardssley NY, sometime after I left NY in '69. Back in those days, my HS/college years, I had more enthusiasm for diving than money to pay for it. They let me hang around and occasionally passed me some bargains. I was the youngest member (mascot/gofer?) of the City Island Divers club whose members also hung out there. Joe and John knew how to do things right. They held an Underwater Film Festival (at least once) that had a really big national (and maybe int'l) draw. Ivan Tors, among others, entered films in it. They let a couple of us younger guys "usher" so we could get in for free. They also had a first class Diving course (NAUI sponsored), held at a YMCA pool in Yonkers, at a very low cost. Good memories... I haven't been scuba diving in 30+years. Did some skin diving off Maui, maybe 15 yrs ago, but that's about it. When I buy my retirement McMansion, w/pool, I'll scuba right in my own backyard....

I guess we all have a little bit of that in us, but few act it out. Very unnerving when we're taken in by someone like that.

One of the last places in The Bronx I hung out in was the Rustic Inn on the south east corner of Webster and Gun Hill. I think I remember that bar, but never went in. My bar crawling days (while in college) were mostly in the Inwood area. Inwood Lounge, Chamber's, and a couple of other places. Had to walk home from Inwood to Woodlawn on more than few early mornings.

Remember HONIGS used to be only on 204th. VOLPES Bakery to its left and GORMANS Bar on corner on 204th and Webster. Later on HONIGS went further back and took over storefront on Webster as in the picture. Used to go there but stopped, bought a portable AM/FM that never worked right, given hard time replacing and never used the store again. Wasn't there a store that opened over on White Plains Rd. a bit south of Allerton that blew HONIGS out of the water? Was it COUSINS

Good to see you here, bxatheart!
Wow! This is an old thread (from 2007). Good to see some interest in the older topics. I left the Bronx in 1969, and I really don't remember either Cousins or Honigs, other than the names ring a faint bell in my head. I was from Woodlawn, went to Spellman HS and Manhattan College. Also Pratt Inst, in Bklyn (so that doesn't really count). Since then, I've spent most of my career, and now retirement, up and down California. Plus 3 yrs in MD and 4 years in VA. Lots of corporate & military moves.
What can you tell us about yourself?

WOW! HOW DID ALL THESE OLD POSTS COME ON HERE??? That happens sometimes, usually when a new comer reads an early thread without noticing the date it was posted. Then they reply to it and it all gets posted again. No harm done. Maybe Adam Wolf will become a member....

Yeah the main entrance was on 204th St and then opened up once you were inside and access Webster Ave. Bought my first bike there that I saved from delivering the NYPost.
