Forgive me but I'm on a food roll....My mother used to buy Claridge meatballs with brown gravy in a can and darn they were good. There was also Aunt Millie's sauce in a jar, which some of my family preferred to good old Ragu, which is still here, thank heaven. There were small cans of Arturo Sauce, with mushrooms which I don't see here, and Broadcast Hash went out of business....that's a shame because it was sooo good and I could eat a ton of it with ketchup on top. What were your favorite foods growing up in the Bronx? God bless. Kris

Preacher Mike, What happened to this board? Something just isn't right. Hi Mimi. That happens every once in a while when someone new to the board reads an old msg and replies to it, not realizing that it was posted a long time ago (in this case in 2008). Unfortunately, Kristine passed away sometime ago. Not sure if anyone currently on the board can answer Diane's question?

Claridge meatballs and other canned foods went out of business after the war. Claridge was owned by my husbands father and brother. Claridge supplied canned products to the armed forces. My husband said they were the greatest meatballs ever.

When I was a kid, I walked to P.S. 22 in Flushing, my elementary school. I had to walk by Claridge's meatball "factory". Sometimes the big doors would be open and there would be guys (up on ladders? kinda how I remember it!) stirring these giant vats of what I assume were meatballs. I see now there was a Claridge's in the Bronx since that's the one people are talking about, but I remember there being one in Flushing. I used to stop and watch them. And there was a penny candy store kind of across the street - also fascinating. lol
