Well, I'm not from the West Bronx either, but I really enjoy hearing about all your old neighborhoods. My area was Morris Park and Colden Avenue, sandwiched in between Williamsbridge Road on one side and Bronxdale Avenue on the other. We had our local characters with crazy nicknames that I haven't thought about in years. Thanks for conjuring up the memory of Chatterbox Mary, Ralph the Pinchy Man, No-neck Nick ......

One of the reasons I don't discuss the Bronx more is that I seem to be the only one who grew up in my area. It's nice to hear about the West Bronx and the various places where people shopped and played but I can't identify with them because I've never been there. Herb no one on the board is from my area either but I know many of the placed mtntioned

What area did you live in, Barry? Maybe I'm not being clear, I am not complaining that no one lived by me or that I don't enjoy hearing other peoples experiences in their Bronx neighborhoods. I'm just saying that many of the areas that come up in Bronx nostalgia threads are areas I'm not familiar with. Ergo, I have nothing to say and it was that way on the Bronx Board also. People on the Bronx Board used to talk about the parishes they grew up in. I don't know a parish from a hole in the wall. I found it very interesting but couldn't add to it. I left the Bronx when I was 17. At that time I didn't know that Belmont Ave. existed. I've never been in Yankee Stadium and have no idea where many of the streets and stores that people discuss are or were and this goes back to the subject of this thread which I thought was, why there haven't been any discussions about the Bronx on this board. in a while.

Herb, I'm afraid there is a very large number of BIC's (Bronx Irish Catholics) that post over at the Bronx Board. A parish is the same as a neighborhood shul/synagogue

I found that interesting because I never knew that people defined their surroundings in that way. As far as I know, Jews didn't identify with their synagogue at least I didn't. I know the few times i brought up my neighborhood there was rarely anyone who knew about the places I grew up around. That's why I prefer this board. We are not stuck with "Bronx Nostalgia" as our main topic. I guess I find it more interesting to hear about how former Bronxites cope with their new surroundings.

As a BIC youngster, the main reason we associate with our churches, is that we (usually) went to the Catholic school there and its a pretty big landmark... So I'm from OLR because I went there and it was across the street from my house. When I talk to other BIC's I say I'm from OLR, but if I'm talking to non-BIC's, i say near PS46... The BIC oldsters might have a different view.. (Sorry for using BIC so many times LOL)
Now in NJ, I say I'm near Bowcraft Amusement Park... Its the biggest landmark around LOL

Whenever I went downtown, I always made it a point to ride the 3rd Ave EL from Fordham to 149th St where I would transfer downstairs to the subway. The ride thru the South Bronx neighborhoods was always interesting. Now as for food....GORMANS had the very best Hot Dogs in all of the Bronx. I was a regular every afternoon before going to my part time job at John Ward Shoes on Fordham Road.

OK, let's see. I enjoyed egg creams and candy from Meyer's candy store. I had a choice of three great bakeries, two on Westchester and one on Watson. There were two barber shops both on Westchester. Each one charged seventy-five cents for a hair cut. I used to go to the Italian store on Westchester called Luigis. That place always amazed me. It had giant cheeses hanging from the cealing. and the whole store smelled from them. Then there were the two delis one on Westchester and one on Watson. I'd get a hot dog with mustard and potato salad. That was a quarter. Then there were three pizzarias. All on Westchester. A large pie was $1.00 and I used to be the delivery guy at one of them. Amazing enough, one of them still survives. Sound familiar? I'm don't know any of the places you mentioned.

I love hearing about the old neighborhood! I loved everything about Parkchester. You could walk to all the 4 movie theaters there. There were so many stores and restaurants too. They had 4 different playgrounds which they called the North, South, East and West! Always had fun in the playground playing marbles and especially ping pong.
Liked going to Arthur Avenue too. Loved all the food stores to go shopping.
We were a lucky bunch to have grown up in such a great place - the Bronx! It will always be in my heart. As I always say, "you can take the girl out of the Bronx, but you can't take the Bronx out of the girl"!

U-Bet's is on sale in Stop & Shop this week and U-Bet I'm getting some! Freedom Land was wonderful - so many happy times there. Was up at Nathan's on Central Ave. recently and it now just a small store as they tore the big one down and put in a small strip mall. But those doggies and fries are as great as ever.

Still getting familiar with the site. This is the first social media site I ever been on so I posted as a guest rather as a member. Had a recent dream of the Bronx and went on the OLV web site and found this site. I posted the following as a guest
