The Florida No Fault Insurance program expired at Midnight...About an hour later there was an 11 car accident with 2 fatalities down here on I-75 in Sarasota.

My insurance agent said, just last week, it had been extended to the end of the year. Then on Friday we got a letter saying it was gone as of October 1st. I plan to call her and give her a piece of my mind this morning at 9 am. Mike, do we need to buy the coverage separately in your opinion? ?? What happens if you don't have it? I am not sure about car insurance issues.

Allstate sent me a letter saying that I could buy the PIP after 1 Oct. I'm not at all sure what the downside of all of this is going to be. I know the Hospital Emergency Rooms are not going to be happy at all....they are going to end up holding the bag on unpaid services to accident victims. The Police Departments are going to have to be extra vigilant in their accident report paperwork in order for it all to stand up to close scrutiny when some of these cases end up in court.

Boy, that sounds like a step backwards for Florida. When NY went with no-fault it was said that this way the hospitals would get paid right away after which the insurance companies could battle it out for who owes who. Now what will happen is if the hospital isn't paid in a reasonable amount of time, it will come after the patient for payment.

You're right Herb, and the hospitals down here will NEVER recoup anything from some of the victims.

I just heard on the news that without the PIP you can be sued if there is an accident and you are at fault. With PIP the insurance will cover it.
I called The Hartford Insurance Company which I have through AARP and purchased the necessary protection.
Since PIP was discontinued my premium went down.
Now that I purchased theprotection, the extra cost brought the premium back to where it was before it was cancelled so it really didn't cost any more money and I have the protection.
Call your insurance company and purchese the protection. It's worth it in this lawsuit crazy society we live in. WHo needs to be sued at our age anyway. It will give you peace of mind.
